Rode Trip to Ofre (5/4/2014)

Turns out the last time I surfed Ofre was on 5-2-13 (Click here to read all about it). Weird how time flies. I figured it was time to get back to business and do another road trip to Ofre. I put the word out that I was going and my friend Christi said she wanted to go to. So we made plans to meet up early Sunday morning.   We met by Starbucks and loaded her gear in my car. She had her 9'6 with her so I loaded her board on my racks then my 9'0 and finally my 7'10.

We got on the freeway by 5:15 am and the lanes were all wide open. We made good time and made it to the gate at Old Man's at 6:10 am and there was no line to get in. That's usually a bad sign (usually no waves), but I was feeling lucky and was hoping for the best. We used Christi's parking pass to get in and there was lots of parking all over the place. I parked by 4 doors and snapped a few pictures of the surf.

It was on the small side, but still very ridable. The set would roll in every 20 minutes or so and there was platy of room on the inside to get some good waves that lined up all the way in. We suited up and took out my 7'10 and she rode her 9'6. after a few hours of surfing I traded boards and tried out her board. It was stiff and heavy and stuck the nose rides good. Over all it was too stiff for me and I was happy to get my board back. We got out around 11:30 and I refueled with some snacks and water.

The second session was really fun. I wore my spring suit (short sleeve with long legs) with my green long sleeve rash guard and my green visor. My arms were on the verge of craping but I still squeezed in a few more hours of surfing in. It was totally worth it. I think I shouldn't wait a year to go there again...

For those of you that haven't heard of Ofre, here's the scoop:

San Onofre – San Clemente, Southern California

San Onofre, just south of the world famous Lower Trestles, could be the best place to learn to surf on the whole West Coast. It’s comparable to Waikiki in Hawaii. Each day of the year there are hundreds of longboarders out on the slow and crumbly waves offered at San Onofre State Beach. The bottom is made up of cobblestones just like its neighbor, Trestles, but the waves break much differently, making it a perfect place to learn. The crowd is usually friendly, and you will see multiple surfers dropping in on almost every wave, riding into shore together. Beware there are some people out there that can get a bit aggressive so if you are new, please brush up on your surfer etiquette and try and leave plenty of room between you and the main peaks.

140 Miles Round Trip to Surf Two Breaks... By Eric Cedeno

This is how my day ended..
El Porto 5-2-13 By Eric Cedeno
This is how it started...

I heard from a few friends that there was going to be some fun head high surf down at O'fre on Thursday 5-2-2013 so I did what any good red blooded american would do... I took the day off work to go surf. I was going to car pool with my buddy Skip, but he wasn't returning my phone calls, text messages or smoke signals so I went with out him. He finally called me when I was almost half way down to San Clemente and said he was out side my place waiting for me. I said I couldn't wait any longer and was on my way down and that I'd call him and left him know how the surf was when I got there.

Traffic was really bad in Huntington Beach on the 405 and I was averaging 7 miles an hour. I lost track of time more than once and wished I had left my house earlier. The traffic let up around Mac Author airport and I felt like was was gaining ground again. I slowed down just a little as I was nearing the last few exits. Time slowed as I was passing a cop sitting on the shoulder with his radar gun pointed in my direction. I saw him put the gun down and quickly merge into traffic. I was in the second lane (closest to the exiting /slow lane). The cop weaved his way through traffic and I thought I was a goner as I attempted to drive at 67 miles an hour. He was just two cars back and one lane farther over when a grey SUV speeded by and got just in front of me. To my left the cop put on his lights and I slowed down to 62, not sure if he was going to bust me or the guy in front of me. I cop got behind the other guy and pulled him over on my exit ramp. That was too close for comfort.

There was only four cars ahead of me in line and that meant the parking lot was full. It didn't take long for me to pay my $15 bucks to get in. As I drove down the hill I snapped a quick picture of the surf peeling.

The surf was clean and I could tell it was going to be a good time and was worth the drive after all.

I found pretty good parking and was surprised that there weren't that many people out in the water. I heard that wind was off-shore earlier and yesterday it was best around 4:00 pm. I call Skip a few more times and took a few minutes to soak up some sun and decide on which board to take out. I brought my 9'0" longboard, 7'4" hybrid, 6'10" mini-log and the 6'4" new lost fish. I ended up going with my 9'0"it seemed right for the slow waves and long paddle.

I surfed my 9'0" for about two hours and ran into Skip in the line up near "four doors." Actually I saw a lot of friends out there, Kimmy from 26th street manhattan, and a hand full of the boys from Torrance / Redondo including Mike Purpus (Southbay Pro-Surfer from the 60's and 70's).

My arms were getting a little tired so I took a wave in and drank another liter of Smart-Water to rehydrate. Then I swapped boards and headed back out on my 6'10" mini-log. On my way out I was Mike shredding a nice right all the way to the inside were he pulled off and paddled right back out again. The I saw Skip killing it on his longboard, cut backs, off the lips really dialed in. It all motivated me to get out there quickly. I said hi the guys again and caught a good right with Mike Purpus in front of me. The wave was big enough to share and I was hitting the lip down the line as he was on the nose in style- awesome!

Eventually I paddled farther north and surfed that left that I saw when I first drove down the hill. That was the best spot for me. I caught some great sets thirty yards out past everyone else and really got my board moving, late take-offs, bit bottom turns, long off the lips. It was the best waves my board had seen in a long time.

After surfing for almost four hours straight I made my way back to my car and had to eat and rehydrate again. I was tired and took a nap in my car and listened to the rolling set waves thunder in every so often. Around 3:30 I decided not to paddle back out for another session, my arms were just too tired. I knew if I paddled back out then I might not have enough energy for the drive back home. So i sat in the sun just a little longer then packed up and headed out.

I snapped this quick picture on my way out, trestles was going off- all day. I'm sure it was a zoo over there. I was happy with what I got and headed for the freeway.

It was just as I was hoping that it wouldn't be... Lots of traffic, for miles, 7 miles an hour again, stop, go. people cutting others off to try and get ahead just to be passed again. It took over two hours to get near my home and by then I was pissed off, traffic does that to me. So I stayed on the 405 for a little longer and got off on the 105 freeway and headed straight for El Porto.

I figured the swell would be smaller here than O'fre but still still be the best spot in the southbay for this swell direction. Plus I had a few hours to rest up in traffic. The surf was 2-3 foot and a little mushy at first, but I got better and the lefts were holding up pretty good. I surf for another hour and a half before going in.

I guess there was a fire going and the smoke was covering up the sun as it was setting. It made for a good picture, but I couldn't help but worry about the people that live closer to that area. Hope they are all ok. I'll keep you posted-

Sunny Sunday at San Onofre: 8-12-12... By Eric Cedeno

On  Saturday my friend Roland called me up and we made plans to meet for an early morning Ofre session. He knew he had other obligations Sunday afternoon so we took separate cars. I Lucked out and My friend Skip said I could use his Annual State Beach Parking Pass (the one that cost $195 bucks) as long as he joined me since he too had the day off. Skip picked me up at we headed south on the 405.

Traffic was very light and we made really good time getting down to San Clemente. Roland got there before us and said he'd meet us in the water. No problem.

We got in line around 6:20 am and Skip and I were pretty sure we would make to the parking lot before they reached maximum capacity. Sure enough we made it in and the surf looked super fun!

Skip and I really lucked out and found our usual parking spot between Old Mans and the Point. I grabbed my Canon G10 and took a few pictures before paddling out on my 9'0" longboard.

I was in the groove in no time. I'd sit about 30 yards closer to shore than the farthest guys out and caught a lot of waves that they missed. I did get run over by some blonde kid but me and my board came through with any damage. The kid was just learning so I tried not to let it ruin my session, it didn't. After a few hour of surfing it was time to head back to the car and rehydrate and snack. I brought enough food for both Skip and I and we ate and watch the surf. A few cars came and went here and there. Some older guy and his kids parked next to us and I could tell his kids were just learning to surf. A group of younger guys and gals parked on the other side of him and also behind him.

Thats when thing started to get interesting. There had to have been about ten of them and they piled out of at least three cars. They pulled out a pop up canopy and put it right in front of the guy's car next me and not in front of their car. Skip and I were cracking up because the guy's face was priceless.

At Ofre it's not a rule, but its more of a custom to put your stuff in front of your car and not someone else's. They started to unpack a big white plastic screen to attach to the canopy and I had to put my foot down. I said "please don't put that up, it'll block our view of the surf." They all looked confused. One of the girls ask if we were leaving and I said they we were staying all day. Then they put the screen away.

Here a picture I took as we were leaving to give you and idea of how bad it was to be the guy that had his kids next to us.

It was getting to be a little lame with the squatters next door so Skip decided to go back out for a second session. I told skip that I would take pictures of him surfing with my Canon EOS 20D on my tripod if he agreed to take of few of me when he got out. He said no problem. Here are some of the pictures that I took of Skip surfing.

We packed up and left shortly after I got out from my second session. I took a few more pictures on our way to go eat.

There was a big line to get into the parking lot when we left. Skip and I made our way to the mexican food place next to Carls JR and grinded on breakfast burritos and coffee- so good!

After eating it was back to the free way and traffic. I noticed a dog in the back of someones truck on the freeway and at first I thought "sucks to be that dog." Then when we got closer the smile on that dogs face was priceless. That lucky dog was loving life. I guess ever dog does have its day afterall.

Small but fun 2-3' O'fre 7-21-12

It was 1:36 at night and I could'nt sleep so I loaded up my Honda Element with my usual three boards 9'0" longboard, 7'10" noserider and my 6'10" mini log. I pack a lunch with extra water and snacks and got the coffee machine ready for I'd need it in another three and a half hours. I checked the surf forecast again and nothing had changed. It looked like a small south swell mixed with a smaller northwest. Malibu was probably going to be 1-3' and super crowded like any given saturday and it looked like O'fre was going to be a little bigger but not my much. I figured I'd roll the dice and head down to San Clemente and surf the point (off to the the right of Old Mans). At 5:00 am my alarm went off, I turn on the coffee machine and got dressed and triple checked that I had a few extra bucks in my wallet for parking at the lot before I left the house around 5:30 am.

I made my way to the 405 freeway and headed south. Traffic was light and there weren't that many knuckle heads out trying to cause accidents. The 405 changed into the 5 freeway and still it was easy going until the "Work Ahead" signs started to appear, then the "Lane Closed Ahead" signs. Suddenly the traffic merged from six lanes down to two and we all crawled at 10 miles an hour. Everyone was locked onto the car in front of them leaving no more than just a foot or two of space to insure no one else could possibly cut them off. I almost grabbed my phone to take a picture, but playing with your phone while driving is against the law and I didn't want to risk it because there were cops out on the other side of the orange cones watching no and then. A few miles down the road it opened back up and everyone was going eighty or faster again to make up for lost time.

I took the exit off the freeway that leads to the San On O'fre state beach and the big dirt parking lot that hasn't really changed since I was a kid. I felt lucky that there wasn't a line when I got to the toll booth where you either show an annual parking pass or pay to get in. I handed the old guy $20 bucks and he hand me a little ticket with tape for my window and $5. I headed down the road and easily found a spot between Old Mans and First Point. Low tide was around 5:30 am and it was just turning 6:30 am when I parked. It was small and only a few people were in the water so far.

O'fre 7-21-12
I watched the small waves peak up and roll in to shore while others parked next to me for a few minutes and left, then someone would pull in, look and leave. I watched the sets and waited for tide to fill in a little before suiting up. Of course I grabbed my 7'10" noserider because it is heavy and has soft rails that work best in smaller rollie conditions like these.

O'fre 7-21-12
I made the best of it and caught a bunch of waves. It never got that crowded for a saturday and a few hours later I was getting hot and thirsty so I went in to rest up and rehydrate. The tide was starting to kill it but every non and then a pretty big set would roll up and the guys in the water would scramble around and try and catch it. After watching for a bout an hour I was almost sold on leaving but I really wanted to get my $15 bucks worth of surf in so I figured I'd better paddle out one more time. I looked through my suits in my surf bin and pulled out my spring (short legs with long sleeves). Then I slapped on some more sun screen just in case and put on my hat and paddled out again.

It was small out but the there were only a hand full of people surfing the out front of my car. I'd catch the wave early run the nose and add a few cutbacks when needed. It was fun, small but fun. I lucked out and grabbed one of the larger sets and flew down the line hitting the lip and floating each section that popped up down the line before it finally closed out. That pretty much made the session worth it. I caught a few more small ones and got out, loaded up my car and headed north. The first hour was stop and go at about thirty miles an hour, all six freeway lanes where packed with people and every few miles on the right shoulder were a few cars with concerned people looking at their car bumpers while arguing with the owner of the car next to them. Eventually I made it home and I was still happy I went and with my car still in its original condition, well minus some gas.
