Leah Dawson Might Save Women's Surfing - The Inertia

Published on Nov 10, 2015
Watching Leah Dawson surf is mesmerizing. It's a dance.

“My biggest compliment is not that I surf like a man, but that I surf like a woman,” says Leah. “If someone watches me ride a wave, I want them at the end of it to know that I’m in love with the ocean.”

She smiles a lot, so that helps. But her movements are unique. And in getting to know her, whether overtly or not, it’s easy to decipher she has more ambitious plans that are naturally unfolding. Through her own resources and energy, she’s quickly becoming a modern ambassador for women’s surfing.

“It makes my heart sing when I see other women out celebrating in the water and just playing and rejoicing,” says Dawson. “They’re not trying to do tricks, and they’re not trying to become number one in the world. They’re just going out for their daily medicine…As a lover of the sport I want to see women feeling more empowered to surf like a woman.”

Dawson is also a storyteller. She makes compelling short films like Peanut Butter, a story about her relationship with a yellowed single fin that a lot of people might have thrown away. And she has a strong opinion about the representation of women in surfing. It’s not about sex. It’s not about performance in the water. For Leah, it’s about soul – another word so thoroughly bastardized from overuse that it’s sometimes hard to recognize when we see it. In Leah, it’s boiling. And she’s not militant or overzealous about how she’s profoundly adjusting the narrative in championing women’s surfing.

She’s just her. And that might be exactly what surfing needs.

It's not very often that I get pictures of me riding my longboard...

I'm stoked I was at the right place at the right time and got my picture taken by David -3 Dog! I saw this guy swimming around with a GoPro and he was just as happy to be out in the surf as I was. He said his name is David -3 Dog and I thought that was pretty cool! He took a few pictures of me and said that he would email me if I gave him my email address (which I did).

Of course I was think no way is this guy going to remember my email address and send me pics, but sure enough he did! So we got to talking and this is what I found out:

(NoBadTides) How long have you been shooting water shots?
(David -3 Dog) Been shooting water shots for just over 2 years...when my boss sent me a GoPro for a bonusI get so much joy out of being in the water...with my old body, it takes the pressure off my joints and when waves roll over my back...free massage!

(NoBadTides) What type of equipment do you use?
(David -3 Dog) GoPRO HERO 4 SILVER AND HERO 3+ on wristmount, maskmount and bobber pole

(NoBadTides) Where do you like shooting the most? (local only?)
(David -3 Dog) Local only...Burnout.  Where you saw me is where I be!

(NoBadTides) How much do you charge for a session?
(David -3 Dog) I would like to set up sessions with people...that would be awesome.  No charge...just donate to a dog rescue or homeless food bank...somethin like that.

(NoBadTides) Whats the best way for someone to set up a surf session / water photo session with you?
(David -3 Dog) Email me or message me on IG I guess...I work from home so I can do early morning sessions...Nothing over 8 foot!  lol

Sunny Sunday at San Onofre: 8-12-12... By Eric Cedeno

On  Saturday my friend Roland called me up and we made plans to meet for an early morning Ofre session. He knew he had other obligations Sunday afternoon so we took separate cars. I Lucked out and My friend Skip said I could use his Annual State Beach Parking Pass (the one that cost $195 bucks) as long as he joined me since he too had the day off. Skip picked me up at we headed south on the 405.

Traffic was very light and we made really good time getting down to San Clemente. Roland got there before us and said he'd meet us in the water. No problem.

We got in line around 6:20 am and Skip and I were pretty sure we would make to the parking lot before they reached maximum capacity. Sure enough we made it in and the surf looked super fun!

Skip and I really lucked out and found our usual parking spot between Old Mans and the Point. I grabbed my Canon G10 and took a few pictures before paddling out on my 9'0" longboard.

I was in the groove in no time. I'd sit about 30 yards closer to shore than the farthest guys out and caught a lot of waves that they missed. I did get run over by some blonde kid but me and my board came through with any damage. The kid was just learning so I tried not to let it ruin my session, it didn't. After a few hour of surfing it was time to head back to the car and rehydrate and snack. I brought enough food for both Skip and I and we ate and watch the surf. A few cars came and went here and there. Some older guy and his kids parked next to us and I could tell his kids were just learning to surf. A group of younger guys and gals parked on the other side of him and also behind him.

Thats when thing started to get interesting. There had to have been about ten of them and they piled out of at least three cars. They pulled out a pop up canopy and put it right in front of the guy's car next me and not in front of their car. Skip and I were cracking up because the guy's face was priceless.

At Ofre it's not a rule, but its more of a custom to put your stuff in front of your car and not someone else's. They started to unpack a big white plastic screen to attach to the canopy and I had to put my foot down. I said "please don't put that up, it'll block our view of the surf." They all looked confused. One of the girls ask if we were leaving and I said they we were staying all day. Then they put the screen away.

Here a picture I took as we were leaving to give you and idea of how bad it was to be the guy that had his kids next to us.

It was getting to be a little lame with the squatters next door so Skip decided to go back out for a second session. I told skip that I would take pictures of him surfing with my Canon EOS 20D on my tripod if he agreed to take of few of me when he got out. He said no problem. Here are some of the pictures that I took of Skip surfing.

We packed up and left shortly after I got out from my second session. I took a few more pictures on our way to go eat.

There was a big line to get into the parking lot when we left. Skip and I made our way to the mexican food place next to Carls JR and grinded on breakfast burritos and coffee- so good!

After eating it was back to the free way and traffic. I noticed a dog in the back of someones truck on the freeway and at first I thought "sucks to be that dog." Then when we got closer the smile on that dogs face was priceless. That lucky dog was loving life. I guess ever dog does have its day afterall.
