Connect 4: LA, Byron Bay, Bali, and Puerto Escondido ....

What do LA, Byron Bay, Bali, and Puerto Escondido all have in common? That's right SURF! Let's check out what's been going on recently in these key spots... Check it out:

New swell brings pure CHAOS with it to El Porto beach. The good news... a mediocre swell finally hit. The bad: everyone was jonesing for waves and paddled out together. Thanks for watching! I'm Brad Jacobson and I'll sea ya on the sand.

I went down the Pass to film the surf for the Easter weekend and what did I come across, TOTAL CARNAGE. It was so crowded, the surfers were agitated, so there were drop-ins and accidents everywhere. To be honest I am surprised nobody got seriously hurt. Lots of people were watching from the rock where I was filming just for the entertainment factor of how dangerous it was. This break usually gets really crowded anyway, but add the Easter tourist and this place is total mayhem! Happy Surfing ForThoseWhoSurf Channel

We were fortunate enough to return to Bali a day before the biggest swell of the year slammed into the Indonesian archipelago. A small group of chargers took on this heavy righthand slab, with plenty of carnage and glory during the morning session. Mark Healy, Francisco Porcella, Pedro Calado, Lapo Coutinho and more cheat death with these extreme big wave wipeouts at MexPipe on the biggest swell ever ridden at Puerto Escondido, Mexico, and ask them how they survived INSANITY AT PUERTO. As dangerous as a car crash, more deadly than a train wreck, more risky than a head on collision, these thrill seekers layed their lives on the line at Playa Zicatela, Oaxaca for the ultimate daredevils prize: survival. The elite big wave spots Nazare, Jaws, Mavericks, Waimea Bay, Cortez Bank, Todos Santos, Teahupoo, Cloudbreak, Ghost Trees, Pipeline and Kanagawa all have a channel...Puerto Escondido does not, making these heroic chargers accomplishments that much more amazing.

Puerto Escondido.. Back at it!

Here is some serious action at Puerto Escondido.. Check this out:

SURFING HUGE BARRELS IN PUERTO ESCONDIDO

\

SURFING HUGE BARRELS IN PUERTO ESCONDIDO. August 19th brought more XL surf to Puerto Escondido! Conditions were overall cleaner this day with epic a-frames coming in at all three peaks. The beach was packed with spectators as surfers got blown out of stand up barrels close to the shore. Standouts this day included Nathan Florence, Ivan Florence, Grant TWIG Baker, Balaram Stack, Coco Nogales, Jojo Roper, Tom Lowe, Marcial Monreal, and several others. We also enjoyed watching the Outerknown Tahiti Pro as Teahupoo pulsed with epic barrels, especially in the morning. We were hoping to see Kelly Slater win but are stoked for Miguel Pupo and Courtney Conlogue. Hurricane Howard continues to strengthen off the coast of Southern California. We are hopeful for some overhead barrels next weekend! Be sure to subscribe for all the upcoming highlights! Our team appreciates all the support. Cheers

Puerto Escondido - THE BIGGEST SWELL OF THE YEAR 2022

Puerto Escondido - THE BIGGEST SWELL OF THE YEAR 2022. Playa Zicatela aka the Mexican Pipeline went XL on August 18, 2022 and Maria Fernanda was there to capture all the action in 4K. Nathan Florence and Grant Twiggy Baker were among the several standouts during the early morning session. This swell was significantly bigger than THE CODE RED II swell that hit Tahiti in July. It was also bigger than Hurricane Frank. This swell offered up the best day of the year in Puerto Escondido and pulled in bigger surf than the Outerknown Tahiti Pro by WSL It's been an eventful summer and we look forward to seeing what Hurricane Howard brings to Southern California later this month. Make sure you subscribe for all the upcoming highlights. Our team appreciates all the support!

Brad Domke rides the biggest skimboarding wave of all time (Via SurferToday.com)

If there were any doubts, Brad Domke has put them to rest. Big wave skimboarding is here to stay and impress. Prepare to watch the biggest wave ever ridden on a skimboard.

The Floridian skimboarder has ridden what is widely considered the largest wave ever on a skimboard. Domke took off on a massive barreling ride at Puerto Escondido, Mexico, in early July, alongside Shane Dorian.
While riding big waves on a surfboard is no longer a secret, holding the line on a finless skimboard is a different story.
Brad Domke's hollow wave at Puerto Escondido not only is the biggest skimboarding wave of all time, but it also opens a new chapter in the history of the sport.
It's time to invest in skimboarding. There are more and better skimmers, agile and established tours, steady and sustainable brands. The International Surfing Association (ISA) may play a key role in the development of skimboarding.
Take an in-depth look at Brad Domke, the master of big wave skimboarding.

Cortes Banks and Other Huge Waves... By Eric Cedeno

I honestly don't know what drives others to surf the waves that could kill them, but I do know that I respect and idolize most them. Big surf is just a relative term that is used in the same way that the word "Spicy" is used. Something might be considered spicy to one person and mild to another (big surf to someone, small surf to another). To me big surf is a few feet over head or bigger, in the 8 to 16 foot face range. I have a pretty large range because it really depends on the surf break. Most of the surf breaks in my area (the South Bay/ Southern California) are powerful beach breaks with shifty peaks and lack channels for safe paddle outs. I'm sure if I can conquer my fear of getting caught inside on a huge 15 foot + wave then I'll be well on my way to becoming a good big wave rider. Until then I will continue to study the different big wave surf spots about the globe, remaining calm in large surf and work on holding my breath underwater.

I'm really amazed and inspired by people that push the limits of surfing giant waves like Garrett. Check out this epic wave:

Rising from the depths of the North Pacific lies a fabled island, now submerged just 15 feet below the surface of the ocean. Rumors and warnings about Cortes Bank abound, but among big wave surfers, this legendary rock is famous for one simple (and massive) reason: this is the home of the biggest rideable wave on the face of the earth. In this dramatic work of narrative non-fiction, journalist Chris Dixon unlocks the secrets of Cortes Bank and pulls readers into the harrowing world of big wave surfing and high seas adventure above the most enigmatic and dangerous rock in the sea. The true story of this Everest of the sea will thrill anyone with an abiding curiosity of—and respect for—mother ocean.

Chris Dixon's work has appeared in the New York Times, the New York Times Magazine, Outside, Men's Journal, Surfer, and Surfer's Journal. He lives in Charleston, South Carolina.
