I think Brad Jacobson does a really good job describing the basics of surfing and also provides some good insight to localism. So if you're new to surfing this may really help you stay safe in and out of the water. Check it out:
Watch this before heading out to try surfing. It's just the basics but it will give you a bit more of an understanding of the surf equipment you will be using.

I had a natural talent for drowning myself when I was a kid. I definitely would not be here today without the quick reaction of the YCMA lifeguard that was on duty when I was two years old. I have a lot of respect for lifeguards and for people that pay attention and take action to rescue people that are drowning. Check out these videos to see some heroes in action and learn more the warning signs and what steps to take to save a life.

This situation was pretty gnarly. As surfer's we're very intuned with timing sets & waves as they break, but most swimmer's aren't. Today in Ocean City, Maryland Kalani RObb & I rescued a swimmer who was potentially drowning. If we weren't in the same area that he was swimming no one would've have known or maybe even seen his situation happening. I feel grateful to have been there & thank you to Kalani for jumping into the situation like he did. Thanks for the stoke & support! - Ben
