Style Master - Jamie O'Brien

Jamie O'Brien continues to push the limits of playful surfing in dangerous conditions. He has carved out his name at Pipeline for doing things like board transfers mid-wave and for riding foamies in the barrel in macking over head surf.  This style master and a personal hero of mine. His creativity is something that continues to inspire me.  Check out these videos to learn more about how his style developed and what keeps him and the people around him inspired.

We asked some of surfing’s finest to talk about Jamie O’Brien’s impact on the surf world. Listen as they give their personal insight, tell personal stories and try to explain exactly what makes JOB tick. This is JOB!

The Yin & Yang of Gerry Lopez

Gerry Lopez is a pipeline style master and a personal hero of mine. His zen approach to the ocean and life is something that continues to inspire me.  Check out this truly remarkable movie about Gerry to learn more about how his style developed and what keeps him inspired.

From award-winning documentary filmmaker, Stacy Peralta comes Patagonia’s The Yin & Yang of Gerry Lopez, a film that lifts the veil on one of surfing’s most enigmatic heroes. While “Mr. Pipeline” is famously known for his calm demeanor in the tube, Gerry built his early career on cutthroat, aggressive surfing. Gerry is as radical as he is Zen; he transcends categorization. He’s one of the most influential surfers and surfboard shapers of all time, an entrepreneur, a family man, a movie star, and a lifelong yogi who brought surfing to new frontiers. His influence on modern surfing is immeasurable, and his story is being told in full for the first time. Produced and Directed by Stacy Peralta Written by Stacy Peralta & Sam George

Eat Your Vegetables (#15) - No Bad Tides - Deep Thoughts Worth Your Time

This segment is about eating your vegetables, well mentally. The vegetables that I'll be dishing out to you are for your own good. It's a dose of getting exposed to something that might be new to most of you, even outside of the usual surf culture. It's ok if you don't like it, but like my mom said,"at least give it a try before next Thanksgiving."

Today I'm Sharing my YouTube Playlist collection of Deep Thoughts Worth Your Time that I've collected over the last ten years. It's a big mix of various Ted Talks, book reviews, podcasts, interviews and great minds that share their experiences. I  hope that you can learn from their successes and failures.

See all the complete YouTube playlist here:

No Bad Tides - Deep Thoughts Worth Your Time

Here are five of my favorites from the collection (so far)... Check these out:

Josh Kaufman is the author of the #1 international bestseller, 'The Personal MBA: Master the Art of Business', as well as the upcoming book 'The First 20 Hours: Mastering the Toughest Part of Learning Anything.' Josh specializes in teaching people from all walks of life how to master practical knowledge and skills. In his talk, he shares how having his first child inspired him to approach learning in a whole new way.

Meet Shaolin Master Shi Heng Yi in his serene talk about self-discovery. Learn why rainfall is an essential part of each flowering. And every small step – part of the journey to the highest peek. The hindrances along the way to self-discovery and personal growth are easy to overcome. Learn how from his talk. For more than 30 years, Master Shi Heng Yi has been studying and practicing the interaction between mind and body. His strength is the ability to smoothly combine this knowledge with physical exercises and to practice Martial art –Kung Fu and Qi Gong. He has an academic background but he prefers to live at the Shaolin Temple Europe, Monastery located in Otterberg, Germany. Since 2010 he has been taking care of the settlement and he personifies the sustainable development and spreading the Shaolin culture and philosophy. As a contemporary monk, Master Yi holds a smartphone in the folds of his clothes as he sees no contradiction between living together with ancient knowledge and high technology. “The universal law of being successful and happy at the same time means finding the balance”, says master Yi. And as for flying – yes, he really can do it! He only needs a stick and a little space. We expect him to fly-in and share about the Shaolin way at TEDxVitosha 2020.
