Eat Your Vegetables (#15) - No Bad Tides - Deep Thoughts Worth Your Time

This segment is about eating your vegetables, well mentally. The vegetables that I'll be dishing out to you are for your own good. It's a dose of getting exposed to something that might be new to most of you, even outside of the usual surf culture. It's ok if you don't like it, but like my mom said,"at least give it a try before next Thanksgiving."

Today I'm Sharing my YouTube Playlist collection of Deep Thoughts Worth Your Time that I've collected over the last ten years. It's a big mix of various Ted Talks, book reviews, podcasts, interviews and great minds that share their experiences. I  hope that you can learn from their successes and failures.

See all the complete YouTube playlist here:

No Bad Tides - Deep Thoughts Worth Your Time

Here are five of my favorites from the collection (so far)... Check these out:

Josh Kaufman is the author of the #1 international bestseller, 'The Personal MBA: Master the Art of Business', as well as the upcoming book 'The First 20 Hours: Mastering the Toughest Part of Learning Anything.' Josh specializes in teaching people from all walks of life how to master practical knowledge and skills. In his talk, he shares how having his first child inspired him to approach learning in a whole new way.

Meet Shaolin Master Shi Heng Yi in his serene talk about self-discovery. Learn why rainfall is an essential part of each flowering. And every small step – part of the journey to the highest peek. The hindrances along the way to self-discovery and personal growth are easy to overcome. Learn how from his talk. For more than 30 years, Master Shi Heng Yi has been studying and practicing the interaction between mind and body. His strength is the ability to smoothly combine this knowledge with physical exercises and to practice Martial art –Kung Fu and Qi Gong. He has an academic background but he prefers to live at the Shaolin Temple Europe, Monastery located in Otterberg, Germany. Since 2010 he has been taking care of the settlement and he personifies the sustainable development and spreading the Shaolin culture and philosophy. As a contemporary monk, Master Yi holds a smartphone in the folds of his clothes as he sees no contradiction between living together with ancient knowledge and high technology. “The universal law of being successful and happy at the same time means finding the balance”, says master Yi. And as for flying – yes, he really can do it! He only needs a stick and a little space. We expect him to fly-in and share about the Shaolin way at TEDxVitosha 2020.

One Last Wave Project - Dan Fischer

This is a story worth sharing. Dan Fischer turned to surfing as a healing aid after the devastating loss of his father and his best friend. On Jan 4th 2022 he created a TiKTok post where he opened up an invitation for people who are struggling with a loss and asked them to share some of their story with him. In turn Dan etched the names of the loved ones into his surfboard as a way to memorialize them in the place he deeply loves, the ocean.

The Ocean has amazing healing powers. It's why when a surfer passes that many will have a paddleout ceremony to honor them. The One Last Wave Project does that and more, for every name has a story. And every surfboard that gets etched with a name provides that opportunity for a little more healing and little more shared happiness.

Below are a few videos where Dan shares his story and information on how you can submit a loved ones name and contribute. If you know of someone that might want to participate please share this post with them or get them connected to Dan at One Last Wave Project.

How to submit your loved one

Please be mindful that there are many individuals trying to submit their loved ones so limit the number you submit to one or two.

1) FIRST and LAST name only or simply a nickname they went by. Try to keep it short. This will make it easier to find them on the board and allow us to fit all the names on.

2) Share a brief story about them if you choose but not necessary.

3) Send to info@onelastwaveproject.com

You can also DM through one of our social channels (instagram, twitter, tiktok) if you would prefer to connect that way but please don't submit in both places.

Note: I read every submission and respond personally so it may take just a moment to get back to you but I promise I will.

'One Last Wave Project' helps people cope with loss

A man has found a way to help people who have lost their loved ones find peace through his love for the ocean.

Help Out - Contribute

We always welcome the help to grow the project. Please send us an e-mail if you feel you have some expertise to offer.

Financial contributions are NOT necessary to put your loved ones on your board. However, many reached out wanting to support the the project in their loved one's honor and so if that is helpful and healing to you, below are two ways you can contribute.

She is currently writing her first book, My Husband Is Not a Rainbow: The Brutally Awful, Hilarious Truth About Life, Love, Grief, and Loss, with a tentative release date of winter 2017.
