Eat Your Vegetables (#5) with the Music of "The Recycled Orchestra"... By Eric Cedeno

When I was a kid I didn't like to eat my vegetables. At the time I didn't see a need for them. I used to joke to my mom that I would catch up on eating all my vegetables at our next Thanksgiving dinner which of course was months away. I understand now that my mom wanted me to be healthy and vegetables are good for me. This segment is about eating your vegetables, well mentally. The vegetables that I'll be dishing out to you are for your own good. It's a dose of getting exposed to something that might be new to most of you, even outside of the usual surf culture. It's ok if you don't like it, but like my mom said,"at least give it a try before next Thanksgiving."

Obviously some people have it better than others, some people make the best of what they got and some people really do like helping others. I encourage you to support creativity like this wether it's for this group of kids of some other person who is trying to make our world a little better. Please take a look at this great story about a creative group of people that have transformed a small town with music.

Landfill Harmonic is an upcoming feature-length documentary about a remarkable musical orchestra in Paraguay, where the musicians play instruments made from trash
Cateura, Paraguay is a town essentially built on top of a landfill. Garbage collectors browse the trash for sellable goods, and children are often at risk of getting involved with drugs and gangs. When orchestra director Szaran and music teacher Fabio set up a music program for the kids of Cateura, they soon have more students than they have instruments.

That changed when Szaran and Fabio were brought something they had never seen before: a violin made out of garbage. Today, there's an entire orchestra of assembled instruments, now called The Recycled Orchestra.

This film shows how trash and recycled materials can be transformed into beautiful sounding musical instruments, but more importantly, it brings witness to the transformation of precious human beings.

I went to the CreativeVisions.Org web-site to read a little more about it and this is what they had to say:

LANDFILL HARMONIC
Alejandra Nash & Juliana Penaranda-Loftus

  • ISSUE

    Youth and Education
  • MISSION

To demonstrate that creative and simple solutions can bring powerful social transformation to the poorest communities.
  • CVF INVOLVEMENT

Creative Visions Foundation (CVF) provides Landfill Harmonic with all community membership benefits and fiscal agency.
Too many children in the world are born into lives with little or no hope. Our film reveals a mind-boggling, inventive effort to change that - musical instruments made from trash. In the barrios of Paraguay, a humble garbage picker uses his ingenuity to craft instruments out of recycled materials - and a youth orchestra is born. Music arises and children find new dreams.
Our film will showcase the power of creativity, hope, empowerment, and community work. We began official production in 2011. We filmed some of the children who learned to play violin, flute, drums, cello, string bass, and more - all made from recycled metal drums, tin cans, and plastic pipes. Their spirits soar with each note they play.
We are returning to the village in 2012 to update the progress of three young children who recently entered the orchestra. Landfill Harmonic shows how trash and recycled materials can be transformed into beautiful sounding musical instruments, but more importantly, it brings witness to the transformation of precious human beings.
Our lives were changed in making this film so far - and with your help in allowing us to complete it, we hope to change yours.
