Things to Consider When Making a Surfboard


Do you ever wonder what it would be like to make your own surfboard? I was recently asked that question and now I kind of want to make a hallow wood surfboard... I mean I've had lots of custom surfboards made for me. I've even designed a few for a friends, but I have yet to make my own from start to finish... 

Here are some things to get you inspired about making a surfboard out of a few different materials. The concepts are all pretty much the same... Have an idea of the basic shape and dimensions, materials, rails, fin set and that sort of stuff. Then make the thing and surf it.

RETO - The Recycled Skateboard Surfboard

REcycle for TOmorrow // RETO. Dating back to December, 2011, Björn Holm has been hard at work collecting broken skateboards from friends, relatives, and fellow skaters in his community. His mission: a daunting DIY project of building a 6'4" fish made exclusively from old skateboards. This is not something you'd expect from a former professional motocross rider from Finland. But with studies in furniture design and an interest in board building, he utilized these skills to piece together a 20 pound, hollow surfboard out of material (skateboards) that essentially have no straight lines. The result: a colorful, 100% recycled surfboard. Enjoy Björn's story... NOTE: After this video was created Bjorn has tested the board, and he reports that its working great! "The board is stable, easy to paddle and catch waves with. And it is such an amazing thing to ride something that you have made yourself. How to make a cardboard surfboard

When I was making the video, I was still very new to the surfboard industry (Just a stoked surfer). So, Hopefully, the video doesn't mislead people. (To do it in the living room or something) I guess the way I did it is only for reference, so good luck if you are trying to make one! If you are making one, please check out the tips!!! (Below) 1. Better to work in a workshop rather than a living room (especially the process of pouring resin and sanding). 2.At least open the window when pouring the resin. 3. For sanding: maybe some people can get away with sanding. (But If you really need to sand in the living room, the way I did it is to cover the whole surfboard with a giant plastic bag, actually I tape two of them together, and then just stick my hand inside to sand it, so all the dust stay inside the plastic bag and stay away from the living room! Hope this might help in some way?)

Surfboard Shaping & Glassing [High-Performance Shortboard]

Start to finish time-lapse of shaping and glassing a high-performance shortboard. Surfboard dimensions are 5'8" x 19 1/4" x 2 3/8". Volume is 28 liters. EPS foam blank. Bottom contours are single concave to double concave at the tail. This is a replica of the Channel Islands Sampler model. Epoxy resin used for glassing. Two layers of 4oz fiberglass cloth on the deck and 1 layer on the bottom with a tail patch. FCS 2 fin plugs and leash plug with Ho Stevie honeycomb hexcore fins and the FCS 2 compatibility kit. Making a Surfboard - What NOT to Do

I made a 9' Longboard with some flowers inlayed for my sister's b-day. I thought my laminating skills ruined the whole thing but I was relieved to find that it was salvageable. And my sister was stoked on it in the end so it buffed out.

Surfing XL Jaws (4K Raw) Black Friday Swell

Filmed on November 24, 2023 at Peahi (Jaws) on the North Shore of Maui in Hawaii. A XL swell filled in over night with waves heights being much higher than expected. XXL EDDIE SIZED SWELL ROCK'S WAIMEA BAY I Raw Days

Friday Morning turned out to be a lot bigger than originally forecasted with waves estimated to be at least 40 feet cresting the North Shore by 2am at the height of this swell. Fast Forward to 7am and thousands laid eyes on what turned out to be the biggest Swell the Hawaiian Islands has seen since the last Eddie Aikau Big Wave Competition in January 2023. Thanksgiving XXL Swell at Jaws - November 24th 2023

A huge swell (21 feet at 20 seconds) hit the Hawaiian shores late on thanksgiving day. The next morning we woke up to huge and crazy conditions at Jaws. First wave of the day Kai Lenny fell on a 60 footer, then went back out for more. Albee Layer proved once again that even on the trickiest and sketchiest days out at Jaws that he can still get barreled. Less than 10 waves were paddled into during the session. Strong winds came up and it became too hard to paddle. 15 year old 'Baby' Steve Roberson got whipped into the biggest wave of the day. I'm claiming it's the biggest wave ever ridden by a 15 year old. From Matthieu Extebarne foiling to Kai Lenny taking waves on the head. There was so many crazy moments during this swell.
