What an absolute trip to be home in New Jersey for the biggest swell I've ever seen & end up in California for this Historic Blacks Beach XXL San Diego 20-25ft Surf forecast. According to Surfline the San Pedro buoy reached a whopping 16.7ft @ 18 seconds, the biggest ever recorded since the buoy was installed in 2004. The biggest surf to hit CA since last Jan '23 hit today. The next swell is on track for the weekend and is likely to be in the same size class. Swell direction looks even more west, so SoCal could be a little bigger than Thu/Fri.

The end of the year in California is getting some exciting wave action. A large swell has come in and is smashing into the coast heavily in the northern breaks. Surfline forecasted 20-25 ft waves, and these looked every bit as big as the 25-30's i've seen at Mavericks. Obviously nothing compares to the legendary big wave spot on a good day, but small handful of Santa Cruz surfers had a treat by way of some XL surf today. Thanks for watching.

Tested out some filming this evening with the Canon R5 and this new 100-500mm RF lens during the biggest swell I've been home for in a while. Taylor Knox and Joel Tudor were out, along with many others, including some who probably shouldn't have paddled. It was big and west, with a lot of closeouts, but definitely some good ones. Biggest is not always best. And in the case of last week’s Wild West swell — the biggest in decades to hit California — truth is, it was only actually good at a handful of spots during short windows of tide and wind, and/or at tucked-in nook-and-cranny novelty waves. (It also wreaked 17 different kinds of havoc across the state, washing over roadways, breaking piers and into harbors.) Yeah, it was a historic surf event which’ll be talked about in parking lots and lineups and coffee shops for years, and it rearranged the relationship with where we surf, but it (mostly) ended up being more spectacle than participatory. And above we present the spectacle, including a mad return to Todos Santos. With more on the way, especially Friday and Saturday across Southern California.
