I managed to sneak away for the weekend to Catalina for my girlfriend's birthday and our friends Mark and Tosh came with us. Per en.wikipedia.org: Santa Catalina Island, often called Catalina Island, or just Catalina, is a rocky island off the coast of the U.S. state of California. The island is 22 miles (35 km) long and 8 miles (13 km) across at its greatest width. The island is located about 22 miles (35 km) south-southwest of Los Angeles, California.
We rented some kayaks at Descanso Beach and paddled north around a few bends. It was a perfect day, hardly any wind and the surf calm almost flat. The only time waves really break on this side of the island is when the Santa Ana winds are blowing (which they weren't at the time). I hear that there are waves on the other side of the island , but I haven't been there yet to give it try.
We found a empty beach that wan't too far away. My girlfriend and I had been here once before but this time we were really prepared. We pulled up the beach and unpacked the cooler and the waterproof Ipod Radio and settled in for some relaxation.
It was awesome, just the best way to spend the afternoon. Every now and then a little wave would peal down the shore of our pebbly beach. I had my little olympus waterproof camera and spent some quality time in the shore break taking pictures. These little one foot tall waves had some surprising power to them, plus my ankles were getting a little beat up from the rocks slapping against them as the waves sucked up and broke, but well worth it. Check out some of the pictures I took:
It was a great time hanging out on our own beach for an afternoon. We headed back to Descanso Beach and grabbed a bite to eat at the patio on the beach and that's when my girlfriend noticed that her custom wood glasses were missing. The only place they could possibly be was back on our pebbly beach. She was bummed about it and I offered to paddle back to our beach to see if I could find them, but she said not for me to worry about. I went back to the kayak rental place and told them that I'd to rent one so I could race back to were we were earlier in search of my girlfriends missing glasses. They gave me a kayak for free and wished me luck. I grabbed the water proof Ipod radio and headed out to sea. It looked like the tide was rising so I was in a hurry to get there. I got there in about ten minutes of heavy paddling, pulled up the beach and found her glasses sitting safely on a rock. I tucked her glasses in my shirt and headed back. I saw a few other kayakers out there also headed back to Descanso Beach and I wanted to beat them there so I put on "Eye of the Tiger" on the Ipod and started really digging in. I made it back in record time, a little sore, but seeing my happy girlfriend cheering on the beach was totally worth it! I passed her back her glasses and she wrapped her arms around me, call me her hero and gave me a big kiss!
The next day I ended up getting sick from a bad lunch burrito at the bar. My girlfriend did her best to nurse me back to health in time for our flight back home. That's right we were not taking the boat back this time. Nope, we were taking a helicopter. I guess there is some assigned seating when it comes to helicopter (weight and CG thing) and I ended up getting lucky and was picked to sit up front next to the pilot. Check out the pictures:
