Surf Simply Explaining Details About Surfing That Often Get Overlooked (but are very valuable)

I really love the thought and evolution that went into building Surf Simply in Costa Rica. They definitely did their homework when it comes to navigating the in's and out's of surf techniques and have built a strong foundation of free shareable knowledge on their social media sites.

So let me share a little about them (in their own words) and then we'll jump into four short videos that dive deep into explaining some details about surfing that often get overlooked (but are very valuable). Check it out:

Unlike conventional surf schools, this isn’t about standing up. At Surf Simply we identify the many specific skills behind the sport and then break down the mechanisms, making surfing accessible to everyone. Our team of 8 ISA and ILSF qualified coaches are surf geeks who work with just 12 guests each week, replacing ambiguous surf lingo with clear, concise, systemized coaching. We don’t teach you how to surf. We teach you how to teach yourself how to surf, or surf better through a combination of video feedback, theory lessons, and in-water coaching.

Season 1 will cover 4 episodes over the next 4 weeks: Ep1: Understanding Speed and Grip Ep2: Generating Speed and Grip Ep3: What is Surfboard Volume Ep4: Using an Online Volume to Weight Calculator

Surfing Explained: Ep2 Generating Speed and Grip

This episode was written by Surf Simply Coaching Director Harry Knight, and animated and edited by Surf Simply Coach Will Forster. Season 1 will cover 4 episodes over the next 4 weeks: Ep1: Understanding Speed and Grip Ep2: Generating Speed and Grip Ep3: What is Surfboard Volume Ep4: Using an Online Volume to Weight Calculator

Surfing Explained: Ep3 What is Surfboard Volume

In Episode 3 of Surf Simply's animated exploration of surf science, we explain how the surfboards volume impacts which waves you can catch, and your success at catching those waves.

Surfing Explained: Ep4 Using an Online Volume to Weight Calculator

Use the Surf Simply calculator here: Www.surfsimply.com/volume-to-weight-calculator/ Use the Surf Simply Tree of Knowledge here: https://surfsimply.com/tree-of-knowle... One thing this chart does not illustrate is the exponential increase in time that each level will take to master. Because of the way each skill builds on its predecessors, so the more advanced skills have increasingly more components, and may also require more specific conditions in order to practice them. Consequently, if we assume someone was able to surf regularly on a majority of days, the timeline for working through the Tree might look like this

  • Level 1 – A few days to a few weeks
  • Level 2 – A few weeks to a few months
  • Level 3 – A few months to a few years
  • Level 4 – A few years to a few decades

The end of Level 4 does not represent the end of your development, as these sections are just introductions to those specific areas of advanced surfing. If you have mastered even one of section of Level 4 and are still looking to progress, you should probably be thinking about long term professional coaching. Surfing is a wonderful sport because there really is no end to the potential for development.

Mike Stewart paddles Big Nazaré [bodyboard]

Mike Stewart returned to the world's most famous underwater canyon, two years after riding a few giants alongside Dudu Pedra. Despite the challenging ocean conditions, the Hawaiian bodyboarder, 55, paddled out on his own at Praia do Norte, in Nazaré, and attacked the mighty waves without jet ski support. The swell, influenced by tropical storm Leslie, was sending waves in the 20-to-40-foot range. Stewart paddled into his mountains of choice and then got back to the lineup using arm power only. "The way I figured things was that if I couldn’t make the paddle out, then I probably shouldn’t try to handle the conditions," explained Stewart.
