I checked both
Surfline.com and
Swellmagnet.com for the local surf report and tides at Torrance (CA, USA). Surfline was claiming that the surf was in the waist to shoulder high range and swellmagnet was streaming live video of Torrance with no one out, which makes it hard to tell how big the surf really is.
I loaded up my car with a few surf boards (6'10" mini log, 7'4 hybrid & 9' longboard) and did a surf check. The wind was pushing pretty hard at the beach and it was easy to find parking around this time (1 pm). The tide was still pretty low and should start getting higher as the day rolls on. It still looked a bit chaotic so I decided to keep driving south.
I pulled up at the hill and took a quick look at Haggs and it looked like it might be breaking, it was hard to tell from over here so I decided to take a closer look.

I parked over by the gazebo and took look at Rat Point and the inside section of Haggs.

Looked like there was only one guy out at Haggs, but it looked tricky and mushy.

I had my longboard with me so I decided to keep driving over to the (Malaga) Cove. It was really windy on the hill and Ski Jump was showing some signs of big surf, but still no shape. There was only one guy out at the Cove and he was on a kayak. It look too consistent at the cove and too mushy at Haggs so I headed back north again.

I checked out a few more spots and it was big out, much bigger than the waist to shoulder high that Surfline had written about. I just watch for a long while. A few of the younger guys were catching some pretty good rides and then would get trapped inside on the bigger sets. It didn't seem worth it for me, not today, but maybe tomorrow will be better.
Like I said, it was big out, much bigger than the waist to shoulder high that Surfline had written about. The logical conclusion is this:
The tallest people in the world must work for Surfline.com
